SYRACUSE -- A busy street on the Syracuse University Hill is temporarily closed because of a water pipe break.
Friday morning, a pipe providing fire service to a store on Marshall Street ruptured. Officials say the 100 block of Marshall Street will be closed while crews work to repair the break, which has flooded some of the street. This is the section of Marshall Street which hosts a number of popular University-area businesses.
This break comes just one day before the Syracuse Orange attempt to break the on campus basketball attendance record when they host the Villanova Wildcats Saturday at noon. Last year, 34,616 people watched the same two teams set the current record at the Carrier Dome. Marshall Street figures to be very busy both before and after the game.
J Michael Shoes, located at 117 Marshall Street, will be without fire protection while the repairs are made. The store has reportedly suffered major flooding, with water pooling in its basement.
Officials say no businesses have lost standard water service. Electricity may have to be shut off temporarily while repairs are made.
