ALBANY -- Chants of “tax the rich” and “stop the cuts” interrupted Governor Cuomo’s speech to the annual meeting of the Association of Black and Puerto Rican Legislators Sunday night.
Governor Andrew Cuomo said,"I can’t see who it is but I know who it is”
It was New York City Councilman Charles Barron and his wife, Assemblywoman Inez Barron who led the chants. They did not stop as Cuomo continued..
While few other legislators joined in, several union members helped out.
Many members of the association disagree with parts of the governor’s proposed budget, which cuts education aid and allows the so-called “Millionaire’s Tax” to expire.
As Barron left he continued to shout. The governor in turn grew more adamant.
The speech capped a week-end log conference of the association, which has close ties with the New York State Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic and Asian Legislative caucus. Caucus members have a lot of clout in the Democrat-led assembly and many have voiced concerns with parts of Cuomo’s budget.
Cuomo said, “Are we going to do it, are we going to do it together?”
As the April 1st budget deadline approaches, those opposed to the governor’s proposal are becoming more vocal.
