WATERTOWN (AP) -- A 44-year-old man has pleaded guilty to fatally shooting his friend after mistaking him for a deer while hunting after sunset in northern New York.
The Watertown Daily Times reports that Terry Hofferberth of Antwerp pleaded guilty to criminally negligent homicide and faces up to 1 1/3 to 4 years in prison.
He was originally charged with second-degree manslaughter after 56-year-old Clayton Typhair of Watertown was accidentally shot in the town of Pamelia on Oct. 18.
Hofferberth expressed remorse for hunting and firing under conditions that led him to accidentally shoot Typhair.
He pleaded guilty Monday in Jefferson County Court and is scheduled to be sentenced on April 25.
