ALBANY -- The Governor says he wants to grow jobs and that a property tax cap will get us there. But without mandate relief on the horizon, could businesses looking for quality of life issues decide to move elsewhere?
Governor Cuomo's mandate relief team hasn't come up with much in the way of relief yet.
A 2% tax cap could spell disaster to communities trying to grow jobs, if the quality of life suffers.
But the view of some lawmakers is pass a cap, and relief will follow:
But Cuomo's tax cap proposal throws another wrench into the business of economic development…
Typically, if a community is able to attract development, the tax base increases. But there is no adjustment for a change in tax base under the Governor's plan….
While Mayors will support a cap with adequate Mandate relief, others like advocates for education, say simply keep the millionaires tax, and scrap the cap on property taxes.
In a related story, Ken Adams who was tapped by Cuomo to head up the State's Economic Development agenda, had been scheduled to be confirmed on Tuesday. The Capitol Report has learned that Adams will not be at the hearing for personal reasons.
