DEXTER -- A missing canoeist in Jefferson County is now presumed dead and the search has been called off for Sunday.

According to the sheriff's department, the coast guard along with state police and sheriff's deputies had to stop searching Sunday because of rough water conditions. 67-year-old Ronald Roth of Orefield, Pennsylvania was out on the Black River in Dexter Saturday with his 36-year-old son Timothy when the canoe capsized. The son was able to make it shore but the dad was swept down river in the current.

It could be a few days before crews able to search again due to conditions.

Previous coverage:

Authorities say they haven't found any sign of a man presumed to have drowned after his canoe capsized during an outing with his son on a northern New York river.

Officials in Jefferson County say the 68-year-old man and his son were on the Black River Saturday afternoon when their canoe capsized near the village of Dexter, where the waterway empties into the eastern end of Lake Ontario.

The son swam to shore and used his cell phone to call for help.

The U.S. Coast Guard says his son saw his father drift away with the canoe. The father wasn't wearing a life preserver.

U.S. and Canadian Coast Guard crews and local emergency responders conducted searches Saturday evening and Sunday.

The names of the man and his son haven't been released.
