The Oneida Nation has filed a brief with the United States Supreme Court asking the court to hear an appeal of a case between the Oneidas and Madison County.
The brief was filed Monday. The request relates to a decision by the Second Circuit Court of Appeals dating back to August 9, 2010. That decision effectively ended the validity of Indian Land Claims. Attorneys for the Oneidas also question whether the lower court's ruling overstepped the legislative powers of congress.
The Court only hears about one percent of the cases presented to it. Madison County will also have the opportunity to file a counter brief for consideration.
