SYRACUSE -- A rollover accident on Interstate 81 North has sent two people to the hospital.

It happened Monday shortly after 5:00 pm near the Colvin Street bridge.

When police responded to the scene, they found a 2008 BMW that had driven off the east side of the highway. It then rolled over as it traveled down the embankment.

Both people in the car were taken Upstate University Hospital. Police say Robert Bertrand, 74, of Ottawa, Canada, was driving the car and had to be extricated from the vehicle. He is listed in serious condition as of Tuesday morning. Police say his wife, Ann Elizabeth Bertrand, 74, was also in the car.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation. The right lane of I-81 north was closed at the crash scene for a short while due to the ongoing investigation.
