ITHACA (AP) -- Authorities say a man swimming in Ithaca's Fall Creek gorge has died in an accident.
The Ithaca Fire Department says it got a report around 7:00 p.m. Monday of a person injured in the gorge.
Officials say bystanders were trying to resuscitate the man when emergency crews arrived. Fire officials say the crews used ropes, a ladder and a metal rescue basket to lift the man from the gorge, but he was pronounced dead.
The victim's name, age and circumstances leading to his death haven't been released Tuesday.
The Ithaca Police Department is investigating.
Sections of the creek within the gorge are popular for swimming, but swimming and wading in the creek are illegal. Authorities say local creeks are running high and fast from frequent heavy rains this spring.
