CAMILLUS -- The United States Postal Service is looking to sell its building in Camillus, but it says it is committed to continuing service in the Camillus area.

Postal Service spokesperson Maureen Marion said, "It is not our desire to change postal service for Camillus. It is our desire to be in a smarter size facility for our needs."

The Camillus Town Board heard a presentation late last month on the reasons for the proposed sale of the building on Kasson Road. The 30 day public comment period began with that meeting on May 24th.

People dropping off mail on Monday had mixed feelings about the possibility of the post office moving.  "It's convenient," said Dennis Hoe.  "You just drive right through so it's easy to get on the road."

"I don't like that idea, this is perfect for me," said Virginia Barrett.

The current facility covers 12,000 square feet. It holds sorting equipment that is no longer used. The Postal Service says it only needs 2,000 square feet to continue to serve Camillus. Letter carriers have not been based out of Camillus since earlier this spring in anticipation of the sale.

The move will not take place until the building is sold. It is possible the Postal Office could remain in that building under new ownership and in more limited space.

"I hope that it stays exactly as it is. We're are a little worried that they won't relocate in Camillus," said Town Councilman Dave Callahan.  "I have a post office box that I've been using for well over 20 years and it would be hard thing for me to lose that."

Post office officials say if they have to move, they will stay within Camillus and mail service will not change.

Central New York has lost several Post Offices in the last few years, including Carousel Center, Elmwood in Syracuse and North Syracuse. With regard to Camillus, Maureen Marion repeated the Postal Service is "selling the building, but, definitely going to stay in business in Camillus."
