HAMMOND, NY (AP) -- State police say they're investigating the death of a 56-year-old Syracuse-area man whose body was found in the St. Lawrence River.
Troopers say John Huniford's father called St. Lawrence County emergency dispatchers around 7:00 a.m. Sunday to report that he couldn't see his son in the river after the son went for a swim off the family's dock in the town of Hammond, 100 miles northeast of Syracuse.
The U.S. Coast Guard, local fire and rescue crews and Canadian authorities launched a search for Huniford. Troopers say the county dive team found his body a short time later about 40 yards from the dock.
Huniford's body was taken to Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center in Ogdensburg for autopsy to determine the cause of death.
He was from Brewerton in Onondaga County.
