NYACK, NY (AP) -- Police say an upstate couple jumped naked from the Tappan Zee Bridge and the woman died in the fall.
State Trooper Glen Williams says the man is in critical condition at Nyack Hospital.
The jumpers have been identified only as a 44-year-old man and a 29-year-old woman from the Ithaca area. Williams says their names have not been made public so relatives could be told first.
Police say the couple jumped together or nearly together from the hood of a parked Chevrolet Suburban on the Westchester-bound lanes at about 9:15 a.m. Tuesday.
Construction workers under the bridge saw the jumpers and were the first to reach the victims. Fire department rescuers from Piermont and Nyack on the Rockland side of the bridge helped get them to shore.
