ALEXANDRIA BAY (AP) -- Police say a Canadian scuba diver has died after a diving accident in the St. Lawrence River off northern New York.

State Police say three men had been diving in about 200 feet of water on the wreck of the Roy A. Jodrey, a freighter that sank near Wellesley Island in 1972. One of the divers showed signs of distress and the other two helped him reach the surface shortly before noon Wednesday.

A Coast Guard vessel transported the three divers to Alexandria Bay. Police say 39-year-old Michael Roberts of Kingston, Ontario, was pronounced dead at a local hospital and 42-year-old Blair Mott of Komoka, Ontario, was transferred to Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse for decompression treatment.

The third diver, 33-year-old Christopher Monk of Aurora, Ontario, was treated and released.
