GEDDES -- It's the day we've all been waiting for. The 2011 Great New York State Fair gets underway today at the State Fairgrounds.

The gates officially open at 8 a.m., and thousands of people are expected to pack the fairgrounds.

New this year, you can expect to see electronic tickets at the Midway. This year, you won't have to worry about paper tickets.

You'll have the option to buy a wristband or a card. The wristbands cost $25 and allow fairgoers to enjoy rides all day long. The plastic cards work like a debit card. You place a certain amount on the card and then swipe it at each ride. State Fair officials tell us this helps them keep track of who's riding which rides and how many times the ride is used.

Daily admission tickets to the fair cost $10 and are available at any gate. Children 12 and under are free. Seniors 60 and older are admitted free to the fair on Monday and Tuesday.

At the Grandstand, Maroon 5 with Train and Gavin Degraw will take center stage at 7:30 p.m. There are also two free shows at Chevy Court today. The Pointer Sisters will perform at 2 p.m. and Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brothers will perform at 8 p.m.
