CLAYTON (AP) -- The northern New York man who was operating a boat that struck a shoal on the St. Lawrence River, injuring himself and five passengers, remains hospitalized in critical condition.

The Watertown Daily Times reports that 64-year-old Peter LaGrow of Clayton was driving the 23-foot power boat early Sunday morning when it struck a shoal about a half mile from the shore in his Thousands Islands hometown, 85 miles north of Syracuse.

The newspaper reports that his condition at Upstate Medical Hospital in Syracuse has been downgraded from serious to critical.

He was one of four people hospitalized after the crash. One has since been released. Two others, including his 38-year-old daughter, remain hospitalized.

Two other passengers were slightly injured.
