WATERTOWN -- New York State Police and Watertown Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that left a woman dead in a Watertown convenience store.

Police say Saturday night shortly after 11:00 p.m., Laura Pettey, 50, of Dexter entered Stewart's Convenience Store on Washington St. and pulled out what appeared to be a firearm.

Police say Pettey then started making suicidal comments and pointed the gun at two employees. When police arrived, Pettey eventually let the two employees go, but authorities say she then pointed the gun at police officers.

Police say two Watertown Police Officers and one Jefferson County Sheriff's Deputy opened fire, with at least one shot striking Pettey in the chest. Pettey was unresponsive at the scene and pronounced dead at  Samaritan Medical Center.

Authorities say the weapon the Pettey was carrying was a pellet pistol.

The shooting remains under investigation.
