Concern that firefighter was trapped
Syracuse Firefighters heard a 'mayday' call--firefighter down--during a housefire early Sunday morning, but it turned out to be an honest mistake.
They were at an apartment complex on Camp Avenue, off Valley Drive on Syracuse's Southside, after an alarm was turned in at 4:10 this morning. They were in the process of rescuing a man from the building --we're told they were dragging him out--when he said 'Ican't breathe, get me out of here.' That message was picked up on a firefighter's mike system and heard by another firefighter, who assumed it was a trapped firefighter speaking, so the 'mayday' alarm was given.
After a search, it was quickly found to be an honest mistake.
The rescued man is being treated at University Hospital. The fire itself was held to the kitchen area of one apartment, and though windows had to be boarded up afterwards, the damage is minor.
