SYRACUSE -- A Syracuse man is facing multiple charges after police say he stabbed two women.

Syracuse Police say 51-year-old Gary Vandermark was arguing with two people in front of 118 Wayne Street just after 5:30 Sunday afternoon when he stabbed both of them. Vandermark allegedly stabbed Theresa Costa-Hackett, 48, approximately four times in the chest, puncturing her heart. She was taken to Upstate University Hospital in critical condition, and at last check she was in the Intensive Care Unit, but upgraded to serious conditon.

Lisa Krigbaum, 50, was also stabbed, according to investigators. She's recovering from non-life threatening injuries to her hands. She also suffered a head wound.  She spoke exclusively to CNY Central about the attack.

"Everybody was running around, didn't know what to do. This whole block was full of cops, ambulances, fire trucks," said Krigbaum.  "I was really upset. This guy isn't going to get away with it."

Krigbaum says she thinks Vandermark attacked them, because he's upset he is getting evicted from his apartment.  He lives next door to the victims.

Two uninvolved parties stepped in to break up the fight, and then Vandermark went back into his home on Wayne Street, said police in a press release. Officers surrounded the residence before taking Vandermark into custody. Police say he was identified by several witnesses as the prime suspect.

Vandermark is charged with first degree assault and second degree criminal possession of a weapon. He was arraigned in Syracuse City Court Monday morning, where he pleaded pleaded not guilty and was jailed on $100,000 cash bail or bond. He is scheduled to return to court on Friday for a preliminary hearing.

Should Vandermark make bail, an order of protection was placed against him by the judge at the arraignment since he lives next door to the alleged victims.
