CAMILLUS -- The people have spoken in the Town of Camillus by voting to abolish the job of tax receiver.

In a vote held Tuesday, Camillus residents voted 914 to 401 to eliminate the job of tax receiver. The town clerk will take over the position in an effort to consolidate and save money.

"The proposal could save the town up to $60,000 in the first year. That's doing away with the position and eliminates the salary, the benefits that go along with it. The town clerk would then streamline the office and it would save money all the way around,” said Mary Ann Coogan, Camillus Town Supervisor.

Consolidating is nothing new for folks in central New York. People in the village of Seneca Falls voted last year to dissolve into the town. Voters in Altmar narrowly passed a plan to dissolve the village last year, although a petition could still change those results. Residents of Whitesboro, in a landslide election, voted against dissolving into Whitestown.

Consolidation has become a hot topic among local governments. Do you think more municipalities should consolidate to save money? Leave your comments below.
