The Syracuse Fire Department is in the New York City area Saturday, preparing for a run that has special signifigance on the 10th anniversary of 9/11.
Sunday is the annual Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Run. Siller was a New York City firefighter who ran down the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to save people from the Twin Towers on 9/11. Siller died while saving people from the collapsing towers.
30 Syracuse firefighters will be participating in the run Sunday morning. Firefighters say that's more than double the highest amount they've had in previous years.
Firefighters will present a check for more than $15,000 to the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation.
Firefighters say the Syracuse community gave them huge support throughout the fundraising effort, and they can't wait to show New York City and the Siller family the support that CNY is giving them.
"We're going to present that check to the Siller family, and we're going to let them know, and all the people all over the world from New York City,what Syracuse is all about, and we're there to support them," say Syracuse firefighter Ted Ackerman.
A portion of the money raised will also go to the Burn Foundation of Central New York.
The $15,000 the fire department raised is $5,000 more than their previous high. The run gets going at 9:30 Sunday morning.
