BROOME, NY (AP) -- Authorities say police have shot and killed a 27-year-old upstate New York man after he shouted at state troopers and sheriff's deputies to shoot him, then fired a shotgun at the officers.
State police say officers responding to a report of a domestic dispute early Sunday morning found Richard Welden armed with a shotgun at the home he shared with his sister in the rural Schoharie County town of Broome, 30 miles southwest of Albany.
Maj. William Sprague says Welden refused numerous orders by troopers and deputies to drop his weapon. After a 30-minute standoff, Welden yelled at police that he wasn't going to surrender his weapon, then fired once at the officers. Sprague says several of the officers returned fire, killing Welden in a field near his sister's house.
