UPDATE:
Tonight, CNYCentral was on location when crews brought in a sidewinder to help pick up the derailed cars. A sidewinder is a bulldozer with a little crane.
The sidewinder will lift both the cars back on to the tracks. We're told crews plan to start with the first car, which is filled with soybeans. After the first car is on the tracks, crews will move to the second car, which is full of propane. Syracuse firefighters will continuously monitor propane levels to make sure there are no leaks.
If all goes as planned, the rail car will be wheeled out without having to unload any propane. Syracuse Fire Chief Mark McLees says he's been told this is a common procedure and he doesn't expect any problems.
The Syracuse Police Department has released information for drivers that need to travel to the Syracuse University hill area tonight, as crews continue to work at the scene of this afternoon's train derailment near the Syracuse University campus. Fans attending tonight's SU Football game and those going to the Further concert at the War Memorial should use one of these alternative routes.
Traffic from the north of Syracuse: Use Route 481 South to the Brighton Avenue exit, right to Ansley Drive and follow the signs to the Skytop Parking facility.
If you are coming in Rt 81 and you have parking waiting for you in the area of the Dome: follow the detour and you will be directed to Route 690 East. Exit at Teall Avenue and turn left at the bottom of the ramp. Turn left again and enter onto Route 690 West and then exit at Townsend Street. Turn left onto Townsend Street and follow the detour.
Traffic from west of Syracuse: exit Route 690 at West Street. Follow West Street to Shonnard Street. Turn left onto Shonnard Street, which turns into Adams Street. Follow Adams Street to the University.
Traffic from south of Syracuse: Use Route 81 North to Route 481 North and exit at Rockcut Road. Turn right onto Rockcut Road, then turn right onto E Brighton Avenue to Ansley Drive. Follow the signs to the Skytop parking facility.
