If you're driving to your Thanksgiving destination next week, make sure to hang up your cell phone while driving. That's the word from state police who will be out in full force looking for drivers talking or texting behind the wheel.
New York State Police will conduct Operating Hang Up, targeting drivers who use their cell phones or other electronic devices while driving.
Despite widespread public concern about it and people realizing it's dangerous, police say drivers continue to talk and text while behind the wheel. Remember, you must use a hands-free device to talk legally while driving.
If you don't think it's a big safety hazard, consider this. Research by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety indicates drivers who use hand held devices are four times more likely to be involved in crashes that are serious enough to cause injuries. At average highway speeds, in three seconds you will travel the length of a football field.
Traffic volumes are heaviest during Thanksgiving. This increases the risk of highway crashes for everyone. "Every available state trooper will be on patrol during this week, watching for people using cell phones as well as other electronic devices," Major Molinari said. "Speeders, impaired drivers, vehicle occupants who are not properly buckled up, and other traffic violators will also be cited, where appropriate."
Anyone ticketed for using electronic devices faces a maximum fine of $100, along with a mandatory $60 surcharge. You can also get points on your license.
