SYRACUSE (AP) -- A 30-year-old woman whose newborn daughter was found dead in a garbage bin at a suburban Syracuse apartment complex has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder and two manslaughter charges.

Nicole DeJaynes, of the Town of Clay, was arrested a week after the infant's body was found last January in a garbage container in the Syracuse suburb of Liverpool. Authorities said she was staying at a friend's apartment at the complex and was alone when she gave birth there.

Prosecutors said the medical examiner's report revealed the child was born alive and then suffocated.

Defense attorney Thomas Ryan has said DeJaynes thought the baby was dead when she gave birth.

After entering her plea Tuesday, a judge scheduled a pre-trial conference for December 21.
