This year's Christmas Around the World is moving because of proposed changes at Ste Marie on Onondaga Lake Parkway
'Christmas Around the World' is not happening at the Sainte Marie Museum this year, because of planned reallocation of space at the Onondaga Lake Parkway site. But, there is a Christmas program, focused more on the roots of the museum.
Jon Anderson, former site manager and longtime volunteer with Ste Marie, is spearheading a program on 'Old Traditions in the New World' focused on the Jesuit missionaries and Frenchmen who first encountered the Iroquois on the shores of Onondaga Lake.
Anderson joined us dressed as a 'Black Robe', a Jesuit priest, and showed a gift of wampum, explaining its emportance in giving the Christian missionaries a way to talk with the native residents.
'17th Century Christmas at Ste. Marie' will include traditions of the native hosts and Frenchmen as well as 'the first American Christmas Carol.' The program is free, at Liverpool Library on Thursday at 7pm.
