SYRACUSE -- Onondaga County District Attorney Bill Fitzpatrick came to the defense of Syracuse University during his extensive news conference about the investigation into the former Syracuse University associate head basketball coach. He stated Chancellor Nancy Cantor should not be removed from office.
Critics have questioned whether she should be removed because she was in charge in 2005 when a law firm in investigated the allegations made by Bobby Davis. Those allegations were dismissed with no action at the time.
Wednesday night, following a university senate meeting on the Syracuse University campus, Chancellor Cantor made her first public comments about the District Atttorney's conclusion regarding the Bernie Fine case.
Reporter: Can you comment on the DA's press conference?
Chancellor: "From what I understand, the DA was speaking about his broad investigation and as you know we have the Paul, Weiss review. We're a learning organization and that's exactly what we are going to do."
Reporter: Would you like to respond to specific comments about your report?
Chancellor: "My response is that we are a learning organization and we're looking at what we did and didn't do. We're comfortable that we did forthrightly take this on very assertively from an anonymous allegation and that we did our best and we are reviewing because we want to learn."
District Attorney Fitzpatrick said among the witnesses interviewed in 2005 were Bobby Davis, Bernie Fine, Laurie Fine and Coach Jim Boeheim.
