SYRACUSE -- A payment of back taxes has blocked a planned sale of the Hotel Syracuse.

The hotel's current owners owe more than $470,000 in back taxes. The mortgage holders paid $190,000 before today's deadline.

If that payment had not been made, the City of Syracuse was planning to sell the hotel to Fundamental Advisors in hopes the old building could be fixed up and reopened as a hotel. It has been closed since 2004.

The payment effectively blocks the sales.
