Nativity celebrations at Syracuse-area churches
Midnight Mass in Bethlehem celebrates Orthodox Christmas. Syracuse-area churches celebrate on this Saturday
Most of the world's Christians celebrate on December 25th, but the 'old' (Julian) calendar fixes the date on January 7th, and Orthodox churches originating in Ukraine, Russia, Serbia, Ethiopia and the Republics of Macedonia and Moldova celebrate on this date.
As for the 'Gregorian' calendar Christmas in December, there were midnight masses in Bethlehem.
Several Syracuse-area churches held morning Nativity services, including St. Luke's Ukrainian Orthodox in Warners, St. Mary's Russian Orthodox in Dewitt (near St. Sophia's Greek Orthodox, which celebrates in December), and Holy Transfiguration Orthodox in East Syracuse.
