If you even thought about having a few drinks on Super Bowl Sunday and then driving, think again. Police plan to be out in full force, cracking down on drunk driving.
The Super Bowl STOP-DWI Crackdown will run from Friday, February 3 until Monday, February 6.
State and local police plan to set up sobriety checkpoints and saturation patrols to deter drunk driving. Drivers are reminded that driving with a blood alcohol content (BAC) of .08 or higher will put them over the limit.
Leandra's Law is one of the toughest DWI laws in the country. There have been numerous arrests locally since the law was enacted in 2009. It is named after Leandra Rosado, the 11-year-old girl who was killed while she rode in a vehicle with the drunk mother of one of her friends.
Under the law, you can be charged with a felony for driving drunk or impaired by drugs with a child in the car. Anyone convicted under Leandra's Law must install and keep an ignition interlock device in their car for a minimum of six months. You can also face up to four years in prison.
