An attempted kidnapping case in Georgia is highlighting why parents should be talking to their kids about stranger danger.
A 7-year-old girl escaped a kidnapping attempt at a Walmart store in Georgia. Authorities say the man let her go after she fought back. Her mother was in another aisle at the time. Syracuse police say parents should teach their kids not to go with strangers under any circumstance and if someone tries to take them, tell them to yell and scream.
"We have to teach children right up front that if there's a stranger you don't know, you do not want to get in the car with them," said Sgt. Gary Bulinksi of the Syracuse Police Department. "Same like this case down in Georgia, scream if you can, shout, make a disturbance so you'll get people's attention do not go toward cars."
Sgt. Bulinski says parents should start talking about safety at a young age, like four.
"One thing you have to realize, it probably takes less than a minute for a stranger to try and abduct a child," Sgt. Bulinski said. "Fortunately in this case, that didn't happen but even if you just go to the store it's a matter of keeping the child with you, in your sight. If you're going to the next aisle over, take them with you."
