ITHACA -- Ithaca police are investigating an assault and attempted robbery.

It happened around 12:15 a.m. along the 100 block of North Fulton Street.

Police say a man was walking down the street when the suspect struck him in the face with an unknown sharp object. The suspect and victim then fell to the ground, with the victim trying to defend himself.

Police say the suspect tried to reach into the man's pockets, but he was kicked away by the victim and then took off on foot.
