NEW YORK CITY (AP) -- Cornell University's futuristic technology school on New York's Roosevelt Island has a new founding dean who will help open the state-of-the-art engineering and applied science campus.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced the appointment of Cornell professor Daniel P. Huttenlocher on Thursday.
Craig Gotsman will also direct the Technion-Cornell Innovation Institute, a part of the new graduate school partnership with Israel's Technion-Israel Institute of Technology.
The mayor says the $2 billion campus will fuel the city's growth as a hub of applied science, generating business ventures and economic growth.
Cornell is getting $100 million from the city to open the school, with 2,500 students and about 300 faculty members.
Construction is set to begin in 2015, with a tentative opening date in 2017.
However, classes will start this September in rented space.
