SYRACUSE -- Syracuse University is changing its policies after an increase in alcohol related emergencies.

Right now, a student can face probation if they need an ambulance ride to the hospital after drinking too much. Under the new policy, a student would be reprimanded the first time. There was some concern the harsher penalty may discourage students from getting needed medical attention.

The school is hoping the new policy can go into effect by the end of the semester. Officials will work out the details over the next few weeks.

SU says the recent increase in alcohol related emergencies is something schools across the country are facing, not just here in Syracuse.

The university does have several programs in place to help prevent excessive drinking. For example, the Red Watch Band program helps educate students to learn how to recognize alcohol emergencies and respond the right way. Participants go through a four-hour training session, including CPR techniques. The first RWB training session at SU was held in November. The school says it was a great success.

SU offers the Orange After Dark program, which is a series of late-night programs and events, providing alternative entertainment for students. The school is also working with a student-run public relations firm to create and implement an education campaign about the signs and consequences of alcohol poisoning. The Community-Campus Coalition brings in representatives from outside the campus to discuss the issue.
