Debut of 'old' film classics expected
Movie Star Douglas Fairbanks, Senior was 'a Cary Grant/light comedy star' before becoming a swashbuckling superstar. His 1918 movie will be shown in Syracuse this coming week.
The 32nd year of Cinefest opens on Thursday, with people coming from all over the world--literally--to see the vintage 35millimeter movies that will be shown.
Gerry Orlando, who organizes the four-day wall to wall showings, says two movies of note are really bringing in the rare film buffs: 'MAMBA" (1930) was recently discovered in Australia, and has not been seen in the US in 81 years, and 'Mr. Fix-It" (1918) stars Douglas Fairbanks, Sr. before his swashbuckling roles. Orlando says his early years were more comic, more like Cary Grant (this film is restored by Rochester's George Eastman House). Other movies star well-knowns like Clara Bow (the 'it' girl), Frederic March and Jack Benny.
Most of Cinefest is at the Holiday Inn Electronics Parkway in Liverpool, but on Saturday, there are screenings at Eastwood's Palace Theatre as well. And, on Sunday morning, back in Liverpool, an auction of memorabilia and collectibles, hosted by film critic Leonard Maltin.
