ITHACA -- Family and friends will gather next week to say goodbye to a Lansing soldier who died from injuries he suffered in Afghanistan.

Calling hours for Marine Corporal Christopher Bordoni will be held Wednesday, April 11 from 2-7 p.m. at the Immaculate Conception Church on North Geneva Street in Ithaca. His funeral will be held Thursday, April 12 at the same church. Corporal Bordoni will then be buried at Calvary Cemetery.

Bordoni's mother-in-law tells the Ithaca Journal he died Tuesday night at the San Antonio Military Medical Center. The 21-year-old had been in critical condition at the Texas hospital after being injured Jan. 18 in Helmand province. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force based at Camp Lejune, North Carolina. "I join with all New Yorkers in mourning the loss of Corporal Bordoni," said Governor Cuomo. "We will forever honor the service and sacrifice of this New York Marine. I send my deepest condolences to his family, friends, and fellow Marines."

The Pentagon confirmed Bordoni's death Thursday.

The newspaper reports that he grew up in the Ithaca area and graduated from Ithaca High School. His mother lives in the nearby village of Lansing and his father lives in the town of Ithaca.

Bordoni was wounded when a suicide bomber attacked his patrol. His family says it was his second tour in Afghanistan.

Ahead of Bordoni's funeral, flags will fly at half-staff across the state Tuesday in his honor.
