The smell of freshly made donuts filled the air in the Rescue Mission Food Services Center Sunday afternoon, as more than 200 people filled the room to enjoy a free Easter dinner.

While their guests from around the city of Syracuse usually get the food themselves at the counter, on holidays like Easter, Christmas and Thanksgiving, volunteers serve each guest individually.

"Normally people are very gracious when receiving meals," Rescue Mission Director of Programs Alan Thornton said. "This is special because on Easter we're actually serving them. Normally they would come through the line, get their tray, and bring it back to their own table. Today, volunteers are getting food and bringing it to them just like [in a] restaurant."

On Sunday morning about 35 volunteers worked to bring plates of ham, turkey, potatoes, pie and even homemade donuts to the guests. On a holiday like Easter, it shows how much these volunteers care about helping out others.

"I like my family, but I feel like this is more important," said Jacob Starawicz. "I really like to help people, it's just a great experience."

On a daily basis, the Rescue Mission serves about 600 meals a day, and shelters an average of 126 people a night.
