SYRACUSE -- It's that time of year again; time to file taxes.

Normally, the deadline is April 15th, but it fell on a Sunday this year and Monday is a holiday in Washington, D.C..

This year's deadline is Tuesday, April 17th.

The IRS is encouraging anyone who has not filed taxes to do so online.

Tax professionals tell CNY Central that one of the most popular questions around the deadline is whether to file an extension.

The short answer is you need to file something, whether it's your taxes or an extension, said Sue von Zwehl of H&R Block in Syracuse.

The penalty for a late filing is ten times more than making a late payment.

"It's better to file now and pay later," Sue von Zwhel said.

There is an exception this year for people on unemployment. If you were on unemployment for at least 30 consecutive days in 2011,  you can file an extension without a penalty payment; however, the government will charge interest.

To get your questions about the tax deadline answered, be sure to tune into NBC 3 between 5:00-6:30 Monday for our Financial 411 segment. Our panel of experts will be taking your phone calls.
