LANSING, TOMPKINS CO. -- A Groton man could face more serious charges now that the man he allegedly stabbed has died.

40-year-old Dana Houghtling, of 734 W. Groton Road, is currently charged with assault stemming from a fight with 31-year-old Jeff West, of 125 Old Peruville Road.

The two got into a fight around 10:30 p.m. Sunday at a home along the 700 block of Van Ostrand Road in the Town of Lansing. Tompkins County Sheriff's deputies say Houghtling stabbed West who was later taken to Upstate University Hospital in critical condition. West died from his injuries on Monday.

According to witnesses, Houghtling took off in his car, which was later found off the road near the intersection of Van Ostrand and Newman Roads.

Houghtling is charged with assault, a felony. He was arraigned in the Town of Lansing Court and was sent to the Tompkins County Jail in lieu of $500,000 cash bail or $1,000,000 bond.

Additional charges are pending. The Sheriff's Office is now working with the District Attorney on what is now a homicide investigation.
