Dick Clark, famous for hosting TV shows like "American Bandstand" and "Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve" has died. He was 82 years old.

TMZ.com reports Clark was in St. John's hospital in Los Angeles after undergoing an outpatient procedure Tuesday night.

The website says he suffered a heart attack following the procedure.

He had been slowed since suffering a stroke in 2004.

Clark was born in Mount Vernon, N.Y. on November 30, 1929 and started working in the mailroom of WRUN in upstate New York.

He got his start in television at WKTV in Utica.

Clark graduated from Syracuse University in 1951 where he worked for the student-run radio station, WAER. Clark also worked for WOLF radio.

SU issued the following statement on Clark's passing:

"The entire SU family mourns the loss of our family member, Dick Clark," said SU Chancellor and President Nancy Cantor. "More than an American icon, he was a superb guide to tectonic shifts in American popular culture for generations. We at his alma mater will remember him most fondly, however, for the warmth and generosity with which he helped guide generations of SU students as they set out to navigate the landscape of careers in the entertainment industry. Our thoughts are with Kari and the entire Clark family, and we will miss Dick greatly."

The original "American Bandstand" was one of network TV's longest-running series as part of ABC's daytime lineup from 1957 to 1987. Over the years, it introduced stars ranging from Buddy Holly to Michael Jackson to Madonna.

Clark created "the American Music Awards" in 1987 to rival the Grammys. He also played a role in the global fundraiser called "Live Aid."

Clark was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993.

Clark is survived by his wife Kari and three children.
