CLAY -- Two different agencies are now investigating what went wrong and caused an explosion in a middle school science lab.
The explosion happened Thursday afternoon at Soule Road Middle School in the Liverpool School District. The teacher was doing a demonstration in an eighth grade class when a chemical spontaneously combusted. Three students and the teacher were injured in the fire. Superintendent Richard Johns says students actually ran into the hallway while their clothes were still on fire.
Both the Onondaga County Sheriff's Department and the State Fire Marshals are investigating the accident. Superintendent Johns says, "I spoke with the teacher and he's perplexed about how exactly this occurred and we'll have to wait and see what our experts tell us, and obviously do whatever we need to do so nothing like this happens again." Guidance counselors and extra security officers were helping students at the school Friday.
As of Friday evening, one student was still at Upstate University Hospital recovering, and will be for a few days. Two other students and a teacher have already been released.
