SYRACUSE -- A Syracuse man was sentenced to 20 years behind bars for what the judge called a senseless and brutal attack of a sleeping 12-year-old boy last year.
Scott E. Miles, 35, was sentenced in Onondaga County Court on Monday morning for beating a 12-year-old boy in September 2011.
Miles, a registered level three sex offender, pleaded guilty to first degree burglary and was sentenced to 20 years in prison and 5 years post release supervision. Miles originally pleaded not-guilty at his arraignment.
Investigators say the 12-year-old boy was home alone sleeping at the Orchard Estates Apartment Complex on Endres Drive when Miles broke in and beat him with a pool cue. The boy suffered serious injuries.
Miles was arrested after the boy recognized him from the picture on Miles' Facebook page. Miles had connected with the boy's mother after the attack, but police don't know why.
"You turned that 12-year-old child's home into something other than a safe haven, into a house of terror, a house of fear," Judge Anthony Aloi said to Miles during the sentencing.
Judge Aloi called Miles a “violent man” and called his actions a “senseless and brutal attack.”
