VAN ETTEN (AP) -- An upstate New York woman accused of shaking her baby so fiercely he suffered major brain injury is expected to face more serious changes because of the child's death.

State police say 27-year-old Nicole Freeman of Van Etten was arrested Friday and originally charged with felony reckless assault of a child.

They say that 16-month-old Jason Shappee was hospitalized at that point and wasn't expected to live. Troopers say Monday he died over the weekend from injuries suffered in the attack on Wednesday, making more charges against Freeman likely.

Freeman, also known as Nicole Sager, is being held on $50,000 bail in the Chemung County jail. Van Etten court officials weren't available to say if she has a lawyer.

Van Etten is 60 miles south of Syracuse.
