The Cayuga County Sheriff's Department says a 27-year-old man is dead after he drowned near Fair Haven Beach State Park.

Deputies say Marcos Peralta of Oswego jumped into the water with his friends near the main pier, but he was struggling to keep his head above water.  Then, he started to panic.

Deputies say Peralta's friends tried to help him, but by the time they were able to reach him, he was unresponsive.

Rescue crews arrived and were able to get him out of the water.  He was taken to Oswego Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The investigation is continuing.
