Syracuse city school teachers are, by contract, paid on the last day of the school year but those who have direct deposit are still waiting for their money.

The district blames a glitch in the transfer of money and teachers say they've been told it could be Monday before their money is available.

This is the email that was circulated to staff members late Friday afternoon:

Colleagues,

Due to circumstances beyond our control, today’s payroll direct deposit may not be posted by the end of business today. There was a delay in the transfer of funds from the Federal Treasury Department to individual banks. Each bank has its own procedure for processing payroll direct deposits. As a result, the availability of direct deposit funds will vary from bank to bank.

I understand the seriousness of this situation and I apologize to you for the inconvenience.

Suzanne Slack
Chief Financial Officer

Syracuse city Auditor Martin Masterpole
told a reporter with The Syracuse Post Standard that because the last day of school occurred just one week after paychecks were issued on the 15th, the transfer of funds for today’s checks was delayed. Teachers and other staff members who cash paper checks are not affected by this.
