One of the key players in a million dollar Syracuse based heroin ring pled guilty in Federal Court today. Laura Mayfield admitted to being part of the operation that moved heroin out of a Solvay apartment building and also a home on Syracuse's north side.
Federal prosecutors say Mayfield took part in the drug selling conspiracy from August of 2010 to March of 2011. The 50 year old pled guilty to one charge of conspiracy and intent to distribute large amounts of heroin. She could face a life sentence in prison. She is unlikely to face a sentence that stiff if she continues to work with prosecutors on the investigation into her co-conspirators and others accused.
48-year-old Marc Pinkett, 34-year-old Deena Webster, 34-year-old Daniel Rendino, 46-year-old John Durham, and 61-year-old Jacob Sherrill were arrested and face federal heroin trafficking charges. 50-year-old Laura Mayfield was charged with conspiring to possess with the intent to distribute and distributing one hundred grams or more of heroin. All of them are from Syracuse.
Drug counselors in Syracuse say heroin use is growing in the region.
