ALBANY (AP) -- State environmental officials are making some changes to deer and bear hunting seasons in New York.

Department of Environmental Conservation officials said Thursday they are making the changes as part of their five-year Deer Management Plan.

The new rules will adjust bear hunting seasons to stay concurrent with deer seasons and allow deer management permits - often called doe tags - to be used in all seasons in the Northern Zone.

Among other changes, officials will adjust the Northern Zone season dates by opening the regular season for 44 days, beginning on the second Saturday after Columbus Day.

Other changes around the state will give bow hunters more time to hunt.
