EDWARDS, ST. LAWRENCE COUNTY (AP) -- Authorities say a 55-year-old man who died of an apparent drowning over the weekend was trying to help another swimmer in a northern New York lake.

State police tell local media outlets that Michael Lawler of Gouverneur went to help the swimmer having trouble Saturday in Trout Lake in the St. Lawrence County town of Edwards, on the northwestern edge of the Adirondack Park.

Troopers say Lawler went under and had to be pulled from the water by neighbors from a nearby camp.

Mr. Lawler was taken to the hospital in Gouverneur, where he was pronounced dead.

An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.

The person Lawler was trying to help was treated and released.
