SYRACUSE (AP) -- A suburban Syracuse company has been awarded a federal contract worth nearly $100 million to build a radar system designed to detect low-flying planes that smuggle drugs across the U.S. border.

The Post-Standard of Syracuse reports that the Department of Homeland Security awarded a contract worth up to $99.9 million SRCTec, a unit of North Syracuse-based SRC Inc.

During an appearance Monday in Syracuse, Sen. Charles Schumer of New York said the deal could add hundreds of high-tech jobs over the next decade.

Schumer says the contract calls for SRCTec to build nine radar systems in the first phase of a deal that has options to extend for 10 years. The systems are due to be delivered in February.

SRC employs about 1,100 people nationwide, including 850 in central New York.
