MADISON COUNTY -- In addition to the new smoking regulations passed Tuesday in Madison County, laws have also been passed to combat synthetic drug use.

The Madison County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to ban the sale and possession of synthetic drugs, such as bath salts. The law makes sale and possession of the drugs a misdemeanor.

The new law should bring some relief to local law enforcement, which has been dealing with an increase in the drugs’ use.

“It gives our sheriff another tool and a leg up to be able to fight this blight here in Madison County,” said Madison County Board of Supervisors Chair John Becker.

Those in violation of the new law can face a fine up to $1,000 and as much as a year in jail.
