OSWEGO COUNTY -- The Oswego County Health Department reports that evidence of West Nile virus was found near the Toad Harbor Swamp in West Monroe.

The County was notified on August 20 by the New York State Department of Health of the positive mosquito sample collected near the Toad Harbor Swamp.

The Oswego County Health Department says it looks for evidence of West Nile and Eastern equine encephalitis viruses throughout the summer. The EEE virus has not been detected at this time.

Jiancheng Huang, Public Health Director of the Oswego County Health Department, says the child who contracted the West Nile virus earlier this month has recovered.

Huang says the mosquito population in Oswego County, and other areas of the state, are much lower than usual this summer due to the dry weather.

Based on the low mosquito population and other scientific evidence, Huang says the County does not plan to conduct aerial spraying at this time.
