Soldier from Oswego dies in Afghanistan

The Department of Defense announced the death of a local soldier who was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

Spc. Kyle Rookey, 23, of Oswego, died Sunday in Jalalabad, Afghanistan, from a non-combat related incident.  Rookey is survived by his wife Victoria and their little girl named Flora.

He was assigned to the 4th Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, at Fort Carson, CO.

Rookey had served in the Army for 2 1/12 years and had been deployed in Afghanistan since March. He operated drones - unmanned aerial vehicles.

He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and the Afghanistan Campaign Medal with a bronze service star among other commendations.
